Physics 101, How Things Work, Fall 2009
"How Things Work" uses familiar objects to introduce basic
physics concepts, demonstrating the excitement and relevance to professionals in
a variety of technical fields. The course structure is defined by
real-life examples. Students explores concepts as they are needed and then
revisits them later on, when they reappear in other objects. The course
material connects science to our everyday world.

- Students meet Tuesday and Thursday, 9:40 - 10:55 am in room
415, Nielsen Physics. Building. Attendance is required. Students should read
the assigned chapter of the textbook before
a class period. In class students will listen to lectures, help
with lecture demonstrations, engage in in-class activities, and solve
problems alone and in cooperation with their peers.
- Students must complete 21 computer-based homework assignments. Homework assignments are based on the material covered
in the textbook and in class.
Students must submit in the assignments on time.
- Extra credit:
- Three optional extra credit assignment will be available. Each extra
credit assignment is worth up to 5 points. Extra credit assignments
must be handed in on time via e-mail.
- Extra credit assignment
- Each exam is worth a maximum of 100 points. The homework assignments are worth a maximum
of 100 points and the in-class activities a maximum of 50 points. Extra credit points are added to the total score from tests, homework
assignments, and in-class activities.
