Physics 521, Quantum Mechanics II, is a Web-based quantum mechanics course for first-year graduate students.  It is a three-hour course.  Instructional materials for this course are distributed electronically over the Web.  The materials are organized into modules.  Students are expected to work through these modules and refer to the corresponding chapters in the textbooks for additional information.  There are no formal lectures.  The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:25 PM to 2:25 PM for discussions and to work problems.  The instructor will be available after these class meetings to answer additional questions.

Texts:

Students must work through the Web material.  They are encouraged to refer to textbooks for additional information.  The chapters in two textbooks corresponding to the Web material are listed in the module descriptions.  Students are not required to buy both books.  They may use the textbook of their choice.

Class structure:
There are no formal lectures.  Instructional materials for this course are distributed electronically over the Web.  The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:25 PM to 2:25 PM for discussions and to work problems.  The class schedule below sets the pace for the course.  Students are expected to have worked through the Web-based materials before the materials are scheduled for discussion.

Homework Assignments:
The class materials on the World Wide Web are divided into modules.  Each module is associated with a homework assignment which must be handed in before its due date given in the assignment schedule.  Solutions to the homework assignments will be available after the due date.

Exams:
Two in-class exams will be given, during the class period on February 28, 1:25 PM - 3:25 PM, and during the exam period on May 3, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM.
Grades:
On each test you can score up to 100 points.  Homework scores will be normalized to a maximum of 100 points.  You must get 90% of the homework problems right to get 100 points.  Test scores and homework scores will be added to produce your final grade.
